Ethiopian Government Lifts Internet Restrictions: Major Social Media Platforms Unblocked!

After five long months of an online blackout, the Ethiopian government has finally decided to lift its restrictive veil on major social media platforms. Rejoice echoed across the nation as Ethiopians can now, once again, freely access Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, TikTok, and YouTube without the need for VPNs. This decision signals the conclusion of a turbulent period that commenced on February 9, 2023, when the government enforced strict internet regulations in reaction to anti-government protests within the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC).

A Struggle for Freedom of Expression

Throughout the period of restriction, human rights groups raised their voices in condemnation. The decision to block specific social media platforms was heavily criticized by organizations such as Amnesty International, which asserted that the move blatantly violated citizens' rights to freedom of expression and access to information. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC), led by Daniel Bekele, echoed similar sentiments, joined by the Ethiopian Media Council (EMC), which called upon the government to cease these recurring acts of digital censorship.

Even local civil society organizations, such as the Center for the Advancement of Rights and Democracy (CARD), highlighted the staggering economic cost of the internet shutdown, estimating a loss exceeding US$140 million for Ethiopia. Throughout the restrictive period, VPN usage surged as individuals sought alternative means to access the internet and social media.

Recently, Frehiwot Tamiru, the CEO of Ethio Telecom, expressed disappointment over the impact of these social media restrictions on customers. However, she emphasized that the restrictions were beyond the control of Ethio Telecom, leaving many frustrated and seeking answers.

In the aftermath of this digital revolution, Ethiopians step back into the realm of unfettered internet access, hoping that their online world will remain unrestricted and their voices heard. As they explore the vast digital world, uncertainties linger, as the future of the internet remains unknown.
