Fueling Growth: ShopZetu Secures $1 Million in Funding for African Fashion Revolution

Kenyan fashion e-commerce startup ShopZetu is making significant strides in response to the growing needs of young, style-conscious women in Africa. The company is set to diversify its offerings by introducing beauty and home décor categories, aiming to become the leading lifestyle platform for its customers. With aspirations to serve as a comprehensive one-stop shop, ShopZetu plans to scale regionally and attract international fashion brands while expanding its vendor base to 1,000.

Regional Expansion and Funding Support

To facilitate its growth, ShopZetu will trial regional delivery services in Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, extending beyond its initial launch in Kenya in 2021. The startup recently secured a noteworthy $1 million pre-seed funding round, which was led by Chui Ventures and saw participation from Launch Africa, Roselake Ventures, and Logos Ventures. Angel investors, including industry leaders such as Kendall Tang (CEO of RT Knits), Ben Munoz (co-founder and CEO of Nadine West), Sumit Bhasin (Estée Lauder Inc.), Patricia Ithau (CEO of WPP Scangroup), and Peter Njonjo (co-founder and CEO of Twiga Foods), also joined the round.

Bridging the Gap in the Fashion Industry

ShopZetu's mission is rooted in addressing the challenges posed by a highly fragmented fashion industry that includes numerous offline and online sellers across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. This fragmentation creates a cumbersome shopping experience with limited price visibility and customer trust. By aggregating the available supply of fashion and lifestyle products under one virtual roof, ShopZetu aims to streamline the process for consumers.

ShopZetu currently boasts over 300 vendors, comprising both local manufacturers and traders offering imported fashion products. Together, they have listed over 20,000 products on the platform. Vendor onboarding is free, with vendors paying a commission for sales and availing additional services such as delivery, content creation, digital marketing, warehousing, and returns management. ShopZetu aims to lower barriers to entry and support vendor success by providing these services at subsidized costs.

ShopZetu's Impressive Growth and Market Potential

Over the past two years, ShopZetu has served over 30,000 customers and sold more than 100,000 products. Since January 2021, the platform has experienced a remarkable 400% increase in monthly orders, indicating strong customer traction. ShopZetu is targeting the sub-Saharan African fashion industry, which is predominantly dominated by second-hand clothing. However, the company believes in the potential for affordable new clothing options and the rising fashion-conscious, tech-savvy population in Africa to drive its growth.

Marvin Kiragu, CEO of ShopZetu and co-founder of the popular Kenyan fashion brand Vivo, stated,

"We believe the market for fashion is huge as clothing is a basic human need. While a big percentage of this is currently serviced by secondhand clothing, we are seeing a gradual shift to new clothing as more affordable options are introduced into the market. We believe that online fashion retail will leapfrog formal retail and become the largest e-commerce category in Africa."

ShopZetu's expansion into beauty and home décor categories, along with its regional scaling plans and ambition to become the leading lifestyle platform, reflects its dedication to meeting the evolving demands of African customers. By aggregating fashion and lifestyle products from various vendors, ShopZetu aims to simplify the shopping experience and support both local and international fashion brands. With its commitment to vendor success and impressive growth, ShopZetu strives to reshape the African fashion e-commerce landscape while catering to the continent's growing fashion-conscious population.
