Since the COVID-19 pandemic first broke out in the US on January 20, 2020, it has infected at least 730,000 people in the country. Out of the total number of infected persons in the US, New York has the highest record with about 250,000 cases and at least 36,000 deaths. So far, in all, about 38,600 people have died of the coronavirus in the US., and about 160,000 deaths in the world, according to the Johns Hopkins virus report.

There has been a rising concern and panic among citizens as New York holds the highest number of coronavirus cases in the US. Last week Monday, New York’s Governor, Andrew Cuomo said in a press briefing: “I believe the worst is over if we can continue to be smart … I believe we can start on the path to normalcy.”

In a tweet, Gov. Cuomo, with the support of Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City said: “We NEED large scale coronavirus testing to get back to a semblance of normal.” He further added that “We can’t do this alone—Washington needs to take action.”

In regard to keeping hope alive, six other governors, together with Governor Cuomo have formed a coalition to put together a plan for safely reopening their regions. These other states include Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. They also intend to reopen their economies and schools.

In a tweet, earlier this month, a New York-based medical personnel tweeted: “I feel I must tweet because the press does not reflect our reality. The deluge is here. Our ICU is completely full of intubated COVID patients. We are rapidly moving to expand capacity. We are nearly out of PPE. I anticipate we will begin rationing today.”
