Michael Jordan Donates $2.5 million to support Black voter rights

Ex-NBA superstar, Michael Jordan and his Jordan Brand pledged to give $2.5 million to three organizations that support Black voter rights.

The three organizations receiving this donation include the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc. which will receive $1 million, the Formerly Incarcerated and Convicted People and Families Movement which will also receive $1 million, and finally, The Black Lives Matter organization which will receive $500,000, as stated by the Jordan Brand.

This donation comes as a part of a $100 million 10-year pledge that Jordan and the Jordan Brand made towards the Black community, as announced on June 5. The purpose of the 10-year pledge is to “impact the fight against systemic racism.” It covers three major areas: social justice, economic justice, and education and awareness.

We understand that one of the main ways we can change systemic racism is at the polls,” Jordan said in a statement. “We know it will take time for us to create the change we want to see, but we are working quickly to take action for the Black Community’s voice to be heard.”

Jordan and the Jordan Brand carefully selected the three organizations based on their effectiveness in creating an immediate impact in the American society that will bring about “real change in the Black community”.

“The $100 million statement was just the start,” Jordan Brand president Craig Williams said. “We are moving from commitment to action. Our initial partners can directly impact the social and political well-being of the Black community. We will have a disciplined focus on social justice, economic justice and education, as the most effective ways for us to eliminate the systemic racism that remain in society.”

In addition, the statement said that the selected organizations will act based on the percentage of underrepresented Blacks in target cities and states based on their number compared to the overall population, voter registration and turnout.
