Who is Telfar Clemens?

Telfar Clemens is a queer, self-taught Black designer who created his namesake fashion brand in 2005 in Queens, New York. The collections have always been genderless and unisex, dating back to the brand's inception. Before unisex clothing became the trend in the fashion business, Clemens founded his namesake unisex label. White Castle's costumes were famously redone by Clemens in 2017. Following that, he launched a capsule collection honoring the New York City neighborhoods where the chain is located. The entire profit from the capsule was utilized to bail young kids from Rikers Island. "After we did White Castle, there was this entire movement about 'downmarket' collaborations," he told Dazed, "but I believe it completely misses the point."

Over the years, Clemens has developed a devoted and huge fan following. His past New York Fashion Week shows drew large crowds, were well-received and were well reported. Clemens won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize in 2018, putting him even more in the spotlight.
