Elon Musk Reveals Plans for Voice and Video Calls on Twitter With Latest Updates and End-to-End Encryption

Twitter CEO, Elon Musk, has just revealed his plans for the introduction of voice and video call capabilities to the popular social media platform. Consequently, this new development will set up some competition with other popular social media platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, which currently offer similar services.

The announcement came alongside Twitter's recent introduction of a new feature allowing users to choose from a wide range of emojis as reactions to direct messages aligns with the announcement made by Elon Musk. The owner of Twitter took to the platform on Wednesday to share the news, mentioning that the feature will be accessible through the latest app update. This update signifies Twitter's commitment to enhancing user engagement and interaction within conversations on the platform.

THE UPDATES ON TWITTER

Via a tweet on Wednesday, Elon Musk announced the new Twitter features, saying :

“With the latest version of the app, you can DM reply to any message in the thread (not just the most recent) and use any emoji reaction.

“The release of encrypted DMs V1.0 should happen tomorrow. This will grow in sophistication rapidly. The acid test is that I could not see your DMs even if there was a gun to my head.

“Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number.”

WHAT DOES END TO END ENCRYPTION MEAN

End-to-end encryption guarantees that only the chat participants have access to the messages, with no intermediaries, including the service provider, being able to read or modify the content. The cryptographic keys needed to access the service are automatically provided only to the two people in each conversation.

In decrypted form, messages are accessible by a third party – which makes them interceptable by governments for law enforcement reasons. This encryption method protects the data from unauthorized access or tampering during transmission.

What Other Changes Have Been Made?

•In an effort to redefine Twitter's position, Musk has implemented a series of changes to the platform. Recently, he announced that the company will soon be purging inactive accounts that have been dormant for several years. Musk emphasized the importance of freeing up abandoned handles. Although he didn't provide specific details about the timeline, he mentioned that inactive accounts will be archived.

•Additionally, Elon Musk stated that users on the microblogging platform might experience a decrease in their follower count as inactive accounts are removed. Twitter's policy requires users to log in at least once every 30 days to avoid permanent removal due to prolonged inactivity.

•In a different tweet, the billionaire owner of Twitter hinted at the possibility of reassigning National Public Radio's Twitter account to another company. This came after the public broadcaster ceased posting content on its 52 official Twitter feeds in protest against a Twitter label that implied government involvement in its editorial content.
