Early life

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born on June 17, 1987, in Compton, California. Lamar's family was so poor that he spent most of his early life as a street boy.  However, rather than allow the life in the street to cause havoc to his life, he learned from it and motivated himself to be what he is today. 


In Compton, Lamar attended McNair Elementary and Centennial High School and performed really well. While growing up, he loves writing poems and stories. His passion for writing contributed to his success today.

At age 16, Lamar nicknamed himself K-Dot and released his first mix-tape, titled Youngest Head Nigga in Charge. The song made a huge turnout and became his first step into becoming a renowned rapper. Following the success of his mix-tape, he got a deal with an indie record label, Top Dawg Entertainment in California. 


He released two other mix-tapes in 2005 and 2009 named Training Day and C4 respectively. In the industry, he made friends with other upcoming artists and formed a club of hip-hop singers known as Black Hippy. Not long, he dropped his stage name and started using his birth name. 


After releasing his fourth mixtape " Overly Dedicated, he launched his first studio album in 2011 titled Section 80. Despite being audio, the album sold more than 5,300 copies in the first week of its release and increased his fame. Section 80 success attracted a lot of big names to the young rapper. By this time, he has collaborated with many artists like The Game, Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes.

In the following year, Lamar released his "Untitled Unmastered" which is a compilation of unfinished demos of his To Pimp a Butterfly. Like his previous album, this album also earned the top position in the US Billboard 200. 


Lamar released his next album Damn in 2017, and like the previous, the album reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200. 




So far in his music career, Lamar's most successful album is Humble. Not only did the album reach number #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, but also emerged as number #1 on US R&B/Hip-Hop, and US Rap charts. Next after this, are his winning songs like Swimming Pools (Drank)", "DNA", and more.


During the 60th Grammy Award, he won Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, Best Music Video, and Best Rap/Sung Performance. From 2017 to 2018, Lamar made more than $60 million from his career and endeavor. 


So far, he has earned 13 Grammy Awards, received two civic honors, and appeared on the Times 100 Lists of Most Influential People. In 2018, his album "Damn won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music. With this price, he became the first non-classical or jazz musician to ever win the award.

Like most popular musicians and celebrities, Lamar also has some endorsement deals flooding around him however his only deal is with Reeboks. Lamar revealed that the major reason why he partnered with Reeboks is because of the company's remarkable history of helping kids achieve their potential.


Aside from his deal with Dr. Dre’s company and Reeboks, Lamar has not partnered with any other company. In an interview with Forbes in 2013, he said rather than pursue endorsements as a way of making quick wealth, he would rather focus on creating more music. His opinion is that “All money ain’t good money”.
