What Is Crude Oil?

Crude oil, also known as petroleum, is a naturally occurring yellowish-black liquid mixture that is mainly hydrocarbons and is usually found in geological formations.

The name petroleum is a combination of both naturally occurring unprocessed crude oil and petroleum products that consist of refined crude oil.

The formation of crude oil occurs when large quantities of dead organisms, which are mostly zooplankton and algae, are buried under sedimentary rock and go through constant heat and pressure.

Crude oil is primarily obtained by oil drilling. Before oil is drilled, there will be studies of geology, sedimentary basin analysis, and reservoir characterization.

Once crude oil is extracted, it is refined and separated by distillation into different products for different purposes. Products gotten from gasoline (petrol), diesel, kerosene, and jet fuel; asphalt and lubricants; chemical reagents used to make plastics; solvents, textiles, refrigerants, paint, synthetic rubber, fertilizers, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and many more.
