IMAX Soars to $6.2 Million with “Avatar” Re-Release in China, Capturing 30% of Total Weekend Box Office

IMAX, an entertainment tech company saw its theatres capturing almost one-third of the movie’s weekend box office in China.

IMAX generated $6.2 million as Chinese moviegoers flocked to experience the world of Pandora, with the re-release of Avatar, the 2009 sci-fi epic, enabling it to reclaim the title of highest-grossing box office movie.

The IMAX earned a lifetime box office of $249.5 million which remains the highest-grossing film in the high-definition 3D format as Avatar returns to the highest-grossing theatrical release of all-time position with over $2.8 billion in ticket sales.

In 2010, IMAX's release of Avatar in China brought in over $24 million on less than 15 screens. The movie was responsible for IMAX's rise into one of the most recognized entertainment brands in Asia.

The company currently has over 700 theaters operating in China.

Imax and other movie theaters shut down operations due to the coronavirus pandemic, many cities are opening back up now and we may see people return to the movie theaters to watch movies following the Covid-19 Vaccine rollout.

Although Coronavirus killed many people around the world, with over 533057 deaths reported in America, the world is trying to get back to normal and movie activities are part of social events that people would love to attend. IMAX is expected to pull big numbers in china and we may see the same thing in America and around the world.
