TikTok runs pilot test of new TikTok Stories

TikTok on Thursday confirmed the pilot test of its new feature, TikTok Stories, which will provide its users with an additional way to bring their creative ideas to life.

Although Twitter may have disabled its Stories features called 'Fleets', its Stories format will continue to run on other social media platforms. The new TikTok Stories feature will be added to the platform's existing storytelling tools like videos, Stitch, Duets and LIVE.

"We're always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience," a TikTok spokesperson said. "Currently, we're experimenting with ways to give creators additional formats to bring their creative ideas to life for the TikTok community."

TikTok only confirmed the pilot test but didn't say how long it would run or if if would lead to a public launch. According to reports from TechCrunch the test has been running for several days and is only available in a handful of non-US markets for the time being. The goal is to get insight and feedback from TikTok users.

The newest feature was discovered by social media consultant and Geekout founder Matt Navara, who is usually among the first to find new features in social apps.

The new TikTok Stories will combine the format of Instagram Stories and Snapchat Story, which will allow users upload content that will delete completely after 24 hours. The feature can be found on a newly added sidebar that reveals a carousel of content from accounts users follow, according to Gizmodo. To create a story users can tap a camera button from a new navigation bar on the left side of their screen, then use available tools like stickers, add text, effects, and so on.

Although TikTok Stories is similar to other social platforms, what differentiates it from others is that it allows users to publicly comment on a creator's content. The platform explained that mutual friends can see the each other's comments. There's another tab where you can see how many people viewed your story and whether or not you're following those who viewed your story. There also a button which will allow you follow people back once you click on it.

The addition of the new TikTok feature offers users who don't post regularly an alternative and easier way to engage with TikTok's tools by using an easier format. It will also allow creators casually interact with their fans.

The news of TikTok Stories comes a day after Twitter shuttered Fleets, less than a year since its launch. A Twitter official said the decision to shutdown Fleets was due to poor engagements with the feature.
